Michael Luong Acupuncture & TCM Practitioner

Hello, I'm Michael Luong, a registered acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner based in British Columbia. I've devoted over two decades to the field of healthcare and have been practicing Acupuncture and TCM since 2006. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Seattle Institute of East Asian Medicine.

My journey into the world of Chinese medicine was influenced by my upbringing in Vancouver, BC, near Chinatown. Growing up in a new immigrant family, I was exposed to Chinese herbal medicinals and traditional healing practices. While I didn't fully appreciate the bitter-tasting herbs as a child, I did find comfort in my mom's gua-sha technique for relieving my colds. I also witnessed the relief my mom experienced after her acupuncture and cupping sessions, which she had due to the strain on her neck and shoulders from working long hours as a seamstress. My maternal grandparents, who lived into their 90s, practiced food therapy and regularly prepared nourishing bone soups for our family.

Despite being immersed in this rich cultural wisdom, I initially leaned towards Westernization. My affinity for sciences and mathematics led me to earn a Bachelor's degree in pharmaceutical sciences from UBC in 1999. This pharmacy background proved invaluable for my current profession as it enables me to deeply understand Western medicine, appreciate its functions, and constructively recognize its limitations.

In 2000, I relocated to Seattle for work, managing a pharmacy specializing in natural supplements. This role rekindled my fascination with natural remedies, prompting me to embark on extensive studies of natural medicine, including Ayurvedic and Indigenous herbal traditions. By 2006, I found my true calling in acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Over the past 17 years, I have dedicated myself to continuous learning, training, and practice with masters in the field from China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and the United States. Combining various methodologies in my practice, along with my knowledge of Western medicine and deep understanding of Eastern medicine, I offer an integrated, comprehensive approach to healing.

In September 2020, I made the decision to return to Vancouver to be closer to family, leading to the establishment of this clinic on Broadway. On my days off, I find solace in practicing tai chi and qi gong, as well as spending quality time with my family. I also enjoy sharing my knowledge by teaching Chinese medicine. Assisting me at the front desk are Angel, John, Jodie, Raha, and Joanna, all of whom are students of acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
