Bell's Palsy is a more common occurrence than you might think. Statistics show that about 1 in 60 people will experience it at some point in their lives. While many recover within a few months, the journey to full recovery isn't guaranteed for everyone.

In Western medicine, the conventional approach involves prescribing Valtrex (an antiviral) and prednisone (an anti-inflammatory drug). The shortfall of this approach is that many cases do not stem from viral or inflammatory causes, and therefore, do not respond to this treatment. Drawing from my experience, a significant number of cases originate from weakened adrenal function and an immune system imbalance. This is where the holistic approach of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine shines, offering support for your adrenal function and immune system, and reawakening your facial nerve to facilitate healing from paralysis.

I've had the opportunity to treat various cases over the years, including a significant one involving my mom's experience with Bell's palsy a couple of years ago. At the time, she was 78 years old, and my family and I had recently moved from Seattle to Vancouver. We stayed with my parents while house hunting, and my mom graciously took care of us, providing meals every day.

Unfortunately, after a month of caring for us, she came into my room one night, expressing an unusual sensation on her face. Initially, I didn't think much of it and suggested she get some rest. However, by the next morning, the left side of her face was completely paralyzed. Her left eye wouldn't close properly, blinking became a challenge, her speech was slightly slurred, her mouth drooped, and she experienced difficulties with chewing and swallowing.

Initially, she was frightened, thinking she had suffered a stroke. However, I reassured her that it was Bell's palsy. She felt self-conscious and embarrassed about her condition, opting not to share it with my two older sisters. She withdrew from social interactions and seemed distressed and somewhat depressed. Each day, she would ask me when she might recover. Fortunately, after ten days of intensive treatment, she began to notice improvements, and after 30 days, she had fully recovered without the need for any Western medicine.

My mom's case mirrors the typical presentation of most Bell's palsy cases I've encountered. It is often triggered by a combination of exhausting events or activities that weaken the immune system and deplete adrenal glands. In her case, exhaustion stemmed from taking care of my family while dealing with chronic sleep problems. Other cases may be triggered by exhaustion coupled with a stressful event, exposure to cold, or even a COVID vaccine.

With over 17 years of experience in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, specializing in pain and neurological conditions, we have helped many Bell’s Palsy patients completely recover.

Our methods are exceptionally effective because we place a strong emphasis on:

  1. Supporting Your Immune System and Adrenal Glands: Through our unique acupuncture and herbal therapy, we actively enhance your immune system and nurture your adrenal glands. Our comprehensive approach also ensures that all your internal organs are balanced and nourished, allowing healing from the inside out.

  2. Facilitating Nerve Regeneration: Our acupuncture and herbal therapies are specifically designed to promote the regeneration of damaged facial nerves by improving blood circulation and triggering the release of growth factors. This accelerates your healing process and shortens the duration of Bell's palsy symptoms. The addition of electricity through electro-acupuncture further enhances nerve healing, as each cell in your body requires a small voltage to regenerate.

  3. Reducing Inflammation: Inflammation plays a significant role in the progression of Bell's palsy. Acupuncture's anti-inflammatory effects are instrumental in minimizing swelling and discomfort associated with the condition. We also employ specific herbal formulas to reduce nerve inflammation.

  4. Reconditioning Facial Muscles: Our acupuncture techniques effectively stimulate the muscles responsible for maintaining or restoring muscle tone and function in the affected facial area. By promoting muscle activity, we prevent muscle atrophy and contribute to a quicker recovery.

  5. Eliminating Pain: Some individuals with Bell's palsy experience pain or discomfort. Acupuncture is known for its ability to trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, providing relief and enhancing overall well-being. Furthermore, electro-acupuncture, with a specific frequency setting, amplifies the release of endorphins, effectively alleviating pain.

  6. Reducing Stress and Balancing Emotions: Bell's palsy can lead to emotional distress due to changes in facial appearance and challenges in social interactions. Our acupuncture sessions create a sense of relaxation and stress reduction, aiding in coping with the emotional aspects of the condition. We strive to support your emotional well-being throughout your recovery journey.

  7. Tailoring your treatments: We appreciate that no two Bell’s Palsy cases are the same. All our treatments are customized to meet your specific needs, ensuring a personalized approach to your recovery.

I went to Michael 2 days after I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy, two weeks later I have full function of my face. While I was there Michael also treated other sore points and ailments. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine is a great alternative to healing the body. The process is easy and not painful at all. I will continue to see him for maintenance of my body to keep all the organs functioning properly and blood flowing smoothly. I highly recommend Michael.

I was diagnosed with Bell's palsy. A friend of mine recommended  to look for an acupuncturist expert and I found Michael Luong. First, I was hesitant because I’m not sure if it's going to work on my case. I’m amazed about the result and not even a month to my facial paralyses case. I highly recommend Michael Luong to those who's looking for good acupuncture clinic. I hope this post will help those who are in need as well. Cheers
